Hosepipe Ban update
Hosepipe Ban 2026
The current dry weather brings some complications to the horticulture sector. With new turf the TGA (Turf Growers Association) has negotiated a voluntary scheme that most of the water authorities have agreed to. This exemption is crucial for the successful establishment of new turf. It needs consistent watering to hydrate the roots and prevent stress from heat or lack of moisture.
This voluntary exemption states that newly laid lawns, whether seeded or turfed, can be watered using a hosepipe and sprinkler for the first 28 days from the day of planting. The hosepipe can only be used on the lawn area and must not be used elsewhere. After 28 days you must stop using a hosepipe. But you can continue to use a watering can or irrigation system.
However, it is complicated. There may be some inconsistent messages from the water companies regarding this exemption. Some companies suggest the exemption still applies universally, while others imply it only applies to turf laid by professional landscapers. But some are omitting the exemption altogether.
The UKWIR (United Kingdom Water Industry Research) has also updated its Drought Code of Practice. This now restricts the exemption to turf laid before a TUB (Temporary Use Ban) is imposed. This marks a significant shift from the previous industry understanding where the exemption was applicable regardless of when the turf was laid.
So it’s essential to check your local water company’s specific rules and guidelines regarding hosepipe bans and exemptions for turf. You can find out who your supplier is by visiting this link Find Your Supplier | Water UK
