The sectors we support
Harrowden has been making green roof products since the early 2000s and now works closely with GRO and the NFRC – The National Federation of Roofing Contractors.
The interest in sustainable construction has not abated and the now mandatory requirement for biodiversity net gain for many developments means the green roof sector has never been more important . Harrowden is one of the leading growers and suppliers of the living components for green roof systems in the UK. So we are ideally positioned to help and supply roofing contractors, whether as experienced installers or those exploring this area for the first time.
Our product range is not confined to the products featured here or within our product guide. Importantly it also extends to include contract growing for specific requirements and the development and supply of wildflower and sedum seed mixes.
Green roofs are a sustainable solution to enhance urban environments, reduce energy costs, and create habitats for wildlife.

We would describe Enviromat sedum matting as a slab of low-growing flowers for your garden. It’s a layer of growing medium embedded onto matting for easy handling. Our Sedum Green Roof Kits are designed for use on roofs with a slope of 3 – 20 degrees. A living green roof provides a range of benefits. Not only will it support insulation, it can also help prevent flooding, will filter pollutants from the air, absorb noise and provide food and shelter for a vast variety of wildlife.
Our flat green roof kit comes with everything you need to create a delightful green roof, full of plants and flowers.
There are several components in our kit. A root barrier to make sure the plants cannot damage your waterproofing. Next comes a layer of specially engineered drainage mat to protect against damage to the sedum roof and building. This matting ensures that excess water is wicked away from the roots, keeping your flat green roof secure and healthy.
The Enviromat® sedum roof. Essentially, a pre-grown green roof mat consisting of a carrier fleece for easy handling, specially formulated growing medium and sedum plants.
The patented carrier fleece contains recycled materials that hold the growing medium permanently in place.
Build a self-contained green roof the easy way. Green roof trays come complete with sedum and substrate. So, you can team them with green roof edging and a fleece protection layer to create the simplest green roof solution.
Heritage Meadowmat® was originally developed to meet the demand for a quick-to-install green roofing material with instant plant coverage. It does that job admirably and has brought biodiversity to some amazing living roofs throughout the UK. But it also brings a splash of colour to gardens – as do the butterflies, moths and bees!
Birds & Bees Floral Focus
can also be used on green roofs and is a truly colourful blend of wildflower species that will be irresistible to butterflies, bees, moths and hoverflies. Most of the plant species are perennial.
When laying the foundations for a rooftop garden, garden soil won’t do the job. So we developed our own green roof substrate. It has great water retention properties and a low-nutrient base. Ultimately, it provides the ideal growing medium for establishing and nurturing green roofs. Substrate is not a naturally occurring product, but rather a blend of several different natural ingredients. Since it has larger particles than topsoil, the air cavities between them are larger to help create air pockets that insulate the building and allow for stellar drainage.
Cobbles are recommended for use on green roof installations as a fire break. They provide free draining areas as well as a habitat on biodiverse roofs. Cobbles should be installed in accordance with the GRO code – installed 300mm wide around all perimeters, including rooflights and rain outlets.
“This exciting project has really focused on the legacy of the settlement area and what visitors experience when they are here. We have already had a number of school visits and the roundhouses are extremely popular. They are a great location to truly take learning out of the classroom”
