Great lawns start with great soil

Soils, Substrates & Bark

Choosing the right soil or substrate is an essential part of any landscaping project. Whether its for a lawn or a biodiverse green roof, making sure you have a good quality growing medium will ensure your planting scheme thrives.

Sandy soil is easy to drain but doesn’t hold on to plant nutrients very well. Heavy clay soil has plenty of plant nutrients but it’s difficult to work with and can have drainage issues. Peaty soil is fantastic but if you’re buying it in please make sure it’s from a sustainable source.

A dark coloured soil suggests that it contains lots of organic matter. At Harrowden we produce high-quality turf on these soils and we reprocess some of the organic matter from the turf production process to create some of the best topsoil available.

When it comes to the finishing touches, bark can look beautiful against a healthy green lawn. It will also help to prevent weeds. A well-laid path of bark going around the edge of your new turf can be a wonderful way to finish of a beautifully designed lawn and garden.

We produce and supply all topsoil, top dressing and bark to provide you with options for any garden. Bark mulch is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to protect new planting and keep it looking good. A layer of bark mulch helps keep the soil damp, suppresses weeds and helps reduce the workload in the garden. Play grade bark is clean and bouncy – ideal for use underneath swings, slides, tree-houses.

Substrates, seeding and growing wildflowers

Wild flowers thrive in soils which are low in nutrients. Most garden soil is naturally far too rich for a successful wildflower meadow.

Gardeners are used to feeding and improving the soil to nurture the best possible crops of flowers, fruit and vegetables. But to get the best from native plants take a completely different approach. These plants have very simple needs. The right amount of water, enough soil to grow in, bees and butterflies to pollinate their flowers and a means of dispersing their seeds.

To lay effective foundations for a rooftop garden use our green roof substrate. With its optimum water retention properties and low-nutrient base, it provides the ideal growing medium for establishing a green roof. Substrate is a blend of several different natural ingredients. Since it has larger particles than topsoil, the air cavities between them are larger to help create air pockets that can help insulate the building.

Our customers say it best....
